# St Leonard, Chapel le Dale

St Leonard’s is a Grade II Anglican church in Chapel-le-Dale, in the Yorkshire Dales National Park, in the Diocese of Leeds and the Ingleborough Team.

## Overview

Historic England records a late seventeenth-century chapel with eighteenth-century alterations, restored in 1869, of slobbered squared limestone rubble with stone dressings and a stone slate roof. The plan is a south porch, west bellcote, three-bay nave and one-bay chancel. The mid-nineteenth-century porch has a chamfered round arch; internally a mid-eighteenth-century round arch frames a plank door. A corbelled west bellcote, probably mid-eighteenth-century, is gabled with an open pediment. Windows are chamfered and round-headed; a slate sundial with gnomon sits on the south wall. Inside are four-bay king-post roof trusses restored in 1869 and a mid-seventeenth-century altar rail with turned balusters.

A chapel of ease in the valley was first recorded in 1595; the building received its own parish in 1864. A white marble tablet commemorates workmen who died constructing the Settle to Dent Head railway works between 1869 and 1876, erected by fellow workmen and the Midland Railway Company; about two hundred are buried in the churchyard. The name St Leonard has been used since the twentieth century for the former Ingleton Fells chapel.
