St Lawrence, Stretton Grandison

St Lawrence’s is a Grade I parish church in the hamlet of Stretton Grandison, Herefordshire, on the A417 north-east of Hereford, in the Diocese of Hereford.

Overview

Historic England records a fourteenth-century rebuilding of an earlier twelfth-century structure, a seventeenth-century porch, and a mid-nineteenth-century restoration that added a north vestry. The fabric is coursed and squared sandstone rubble with ashlar dressings and slate roofs: a three-stage west tower with diagonal buttresses, embattled parapet and octagonal spire; a three-bay nave with south porch; and a two-bay chancel. The Royal Commission noted a reset doorway and perhaps the north-east angle of the chancel as twelfth-century, the chancel rebuilt early in the fourteenth century, and nave and tower about the mid century.

The interior has a fifteenth-century trussed-rafter roof, a blocked rood-loft doorway, and a chancel arch of two chamfered orders. Fittings include a restored fourteenth-century hexagonal font and a fifteenth-century four-sided traceried pulpit. Monuments include the Hopton tablet of 1668 (Edward Hopton and Deborah Hatton) and the Taylor tablet of 1676. A fragment of wall painting of St Christopher survives above the south door.
