# St Kentigern, Mungrisdale

St Kentigern’s is a Grade II* Georgian parish church in Mungrisdale, Cumbria, dedicated to Kentigern (St Mungo), from whom the dale-name takes its prefix, in the Diocese of Carlisle.

## Overview

Historic England dates the church to 1756 on a medieval site, restored in 1925. It is a single cell of four bays with a west porch, whitewashed rubble walls, a graduated grey slate roof and a roughcast west bellcote. Windows are round-headed with glazing bars; the east window is of three lights. The interior has king-post trusses with a boarded ceiling, seventeenth-century studded plank doors, cut-down numbered box pews, a three-decker pulpit made partly from seventeenth-century pews (one carved I.R.1679), and a pillar font with a seventeenth-century pyramidal wooden cover. The bell dated 1491 is a Victorian recast.

The village name joins the Old Norse gris dalr (‘pig valley’) with St Mungo. Local accounts associate an earlier church with Kentigern in the sixth century; that foundation date is traditional, not a listed fact. The parish is Mungrisdale.
