# St Katharine, Regent’s Park

St Katharine’s is a Grade II* collegiate chapel on St Katharine’s Precinct, Regent’s Park, now the Danish Lutheran Church in London.

## Overview

Historic England records St Katharine’s College Chapel, now the Danish Lutheran Church, built in 1826–28 by Ambrose Poynter for the Royal Hospital of St Katharine and restored in 1969. It is a tall seven-bay Perpendicular chapel in grey brick with stone dressings and a stone-faced west end, flanked by the Pastor’s House and St Katharine’s Hall. The gabled west front has octagonal corner turrets with spires, a pointed doorway and a tall seven-light traceried window.

The chapel replaced the medieval Hospital of St Katharine, founded in 1148 by Queen Matilda beside the Tower of London; the original site became St Katharine’s Dock in 1825. Queen Alexandra later granted the chapel to the Danish community. The Danish Church in London states that the congregation moved here in 1952, with King Frederik and Queen Ingrid attending the opening on 11 May 1952. The interior is whitewashed and includes late-seventeenth-century figures of Moses and John the Baptist by Caius Cibber, brought from the former Danish Seamen’s Mission.
