# St Julian, Benniworth

St Julian’s is a Grade II parish church on Church Lane, Benniworth, Lincolnshire, in the Diocese of Lincoln and the Southwolds Group.

## Overview

Historic England lists a parish church of the mid-twelfth and mid-thirteenth centuries, with work of 1769 and 1812, almost entirely rebuilt in 1875 by James Fowler. The fabric is coursed greenstone rubble with limestone ashlar dressings and some ironstone rubble, slate roofs with decorative red ridge tiles, stone-coped gables and cross finials. The plan is a west tower, nave with north and south transepts, and chancel with north vestry. The three-stage twelfth-century west tower was heavily restored in the nineteenth century; the west door has a flattened round head with chevron, billet and rich cusping. Fowler added the bell stage and pyramidal slate roof. Transepts of 1769 were mostly rebuilt in 1875 with paired lancets and a vesica. A stone on the south chancel wall is inscribed “GPAC 26 1812.”

Lincolnshire Heritage Explorer and Pevsner note a church in Domesday, an eastern tower arch thought to be undisturbed, a font reconstructed from Norman fragments, and a 1905 screen incorporating original Perpendicular pieces. A medieval churchyard cross is a separate monument.
