Overview
Historic England dates a cruciform Decorated-style church to 1855, enlarged in 1885, with a north vestry and south porch, the south transept raised as a tower with an octagonal spire. The fabric is West Country limestone with Bath stone dressings, cill bands, plinth and stepped buttresses, under a steep slate roof. The listing notes original furnishings and a series of Flemish stained-glass medallions set into the windows.
The Hampshire Field Club records that Major William Colt of Rownhams Hall bequeathed funds for a church opposite one of his lodge gates, with parsonage and schools finished by his widow. The architect was the amateur Rev. William Grey, also architect of St Michael, Swanmore, Ryde. Thomas Ward of London inserted the glass. The west window of the life of St John the Evangelist was damaged by blast in the Second World War; the figure of the saint survived. The parish is Nursling with Rownhams.
