# St John the Evangelist, Walmley

St John’s is a Grade II Neo-Norman parish church on Walmley Road, Sutton Coldfield, opened by the Bishop of Worcester on 2 September 1845. A large new nave of 1985–87 now holds worship; the Victorian church serves as halls and offices.

## Overview

Historic England records a church funded by Lucy Riland, a relative of the rector of Sutton Coldfield, with further money from Joseph Webster of Penns Mill. Henry John Whitling of Shrewsbury prepared the first plans; after he left England in 1844, Daniel R. Hill revised and executed the design at a cost of £2,658. The style is Neo-Norman, briefly fashionable around 1840–45. The fabric is blue-black vitrified engineering brick with red sandstone dressings: a four-bay nave and short chancel. Charles E. Bateman converted a south-east vestry to an organ chamber in 1912–13.

In 1985–87 a new nave was linked at right angles to the north and the old church was converted to halls, offices, kitchen and meeting rooms. The building reopened on 6 December 1987. The parish is now in the Diocese of Birmingham.
