# St John the Evangelist, North Holmwood

St John the Evangelist is a Grade II Church of England parish church on Inholms Lane, North Holmwood, Surrey, built in 1874–75 to designs by Major Rohde Hawkins, now in the Diocese of Guildford.

## Overview

The parish of North Holmwood was formed in 1874 from the Holmwood parish (itself taken from Dorking and Capel in 1839). Hawkins, who lived at Redlands, South Holmwood, and was churchwarden at St Mary Magdalene, designed an Early English church of flint cobbles with red-brick bands: a four-bay nave, a three-stage north-west tower with broached shingled spire, and a lower chancel with south vestry. Building went ahead in the latter half of 1874. The Bishop of Winchester consecrated the church on Easter Day, 30 March 1875. The first vicar, Henry Thomas Waters (1875–91), is commemorated in Kempe glass showing the Latin Doctors and the Evangelists’ emblems. The listing notes later twentieth-century alterations, including a south window converted to a doorway, and interlocking concrete tiles on the nave roof.

Historic England listed the church Grade II on 11 June 1973 (list entry 1228416).
