Overview
Plans were drawn in 1852 by William Tozer of Teignmouth, an amateur architect, and the chapel opened in 1853 among farmland just outside the village. It is built of grey limestone rubble with Bath stone dressings and a steep tiled roof: nave with a west bellcote, chancel, gabled south porch with trefoil timber arcading, and a lean-to north-east vestry. Window tracery mixes Decorated and Perpendicular forms. The interior is modest, with a double-chamfered chancel arch, a collar-rafter nave roof and a boarded wagon roof to the chancel. The east window dates from about 1880.
Luton remains a tiny rural community. The church is usually open daily; if not, a churchwarden’s contact is posted in the porch. A listed lychgate and the Ficklin chest tomb stand in the churchyard.
