# St John the Evangelist, Cullingworth

St John’s is a Grade II parish church on St George’s Square, Cullingworth, West Yorkshire, in the Diocese of Leeds, a mid-Victorian village church in Early English lancet style.

## Overview

Historic England records a church of about 1853, with the roof and south transept renewed about 1900 and the interior refitted in 1902. The fabric is hammer-dressed stone with a Westmorland green-slate roof. The plan is cruciform: nave, apsidal chancel, transepts and a south porch set in the base of the tower. The south front has a three-bay nave with two-light windows articulated by offset buttresses, a gabled transept with three lancets and a quatrefoil in the apex, and a tower with a western vice, a pointed-arched doorway with colonnettes, a clock and an octagonal broach spire with lucarnes. The semi-octagonal chancel sits under a lower roof; the nave has a steeply pitched roof with coped gables and a large five-light west window. The interior is relatively plain, with a five-bay nave roof of collar trusses and five memorial windows.

Local history compiled by Terry Hanson states that Cullingworth was in the parish of Bingley until it became a parish in 1847. Francis Sharp Powell of Wigan donated the site in 1851; the church is said to have cost about £2,000. It was consecrated on Friday 29 April 1853. After closing for renovations in 1902 it reopened in 1903.
