# St John the Evangelist, Cleckheaton

St John the Evangelist on Church Street, Cleckheaton, is a Grade II Gothic Revival parish church whose west tower survives from a Commissioners’ church of 1830–32, in the Diocese of Leeds.

## Overview

Historic England records that only the west tower remains of the Commissioners’ church of 1830–32 by Peter Atkinson junior. The chancel dates from 1864; the rest of the church, a five-bay nave with lean-to aisles and south porch, is of 1886–88 by William Swinden Barber. The fabric is hammer-dressed stone with a slate roof. The three-tier square tower has a west lancet, south doorway, paired louvred belfry lancets and angle buttresses; it formerly carried four slender pinnacles. The interior has five-bay arcades, a chancel arch, a carved oak screen of 1910 with the Twelve Apostles, a pulpit of the same date, and a stone reredos of the Last Supper. Listed Grade II on 13 January 1984 (NHLE 1134593). The parish is Saint John the Evangelist, Cleckheaton, in the Benefice of Cleckheaton with St Luke and Whitechapel.
