# St John the Evangelist, Carlton

St John the Evangelist is a Grade II parish church at Carlton, near Barnsley, designed by George Edmund Street and built in 1878–79 for Edward Montagu, Earl of Wharncliffe, in memory of his father John, Lord Wharncliffe.

## Overview

Historic England records a church of 1879 by G. E. Street in hammer-dressed stone with a tile roof: a four-bay nave with three-bay north aisle, a two-bay chancel, and a square tower over the first chancel bay on the south side, rising one stage above the ridge with louvred belfry openings and a saddleback roof. Windows are of two, three and four lights with Decorated tracery; the east window is of four lights, and two tall two-light west windows are separated by a buttress. A circular stair turret with a conical roof stands on the south side of the tower. The interior has a short octagonal-pier north arcade, an arch-braced nave roof, piscina and sedilia, a stone-vaulted first chancel bay, a wooden vault to the second, and a round stone pulpit.

The church was built to serve the growing mining community of Carlton. Pevsner, quoted in local accounts, called it Street’s “grittiest church”. It is in the Diocese of Leeds and the parish of Carlton St John the Evangelist.
