# St John the Divine, Menston

St John the Divine is a Church of England parish church on Burley Lane, Menston, West Yorkshire, in the Diocese of Leeds, an Early Gothic village church of 1870–71.

## Overview

The foundation stone was laid on 30 July 1870. Contemporary reports in the *Building News* and *The Architect* name Messrs Price and Linklater of Clifford’s Inn, London, and Market Place, Manchester, as architects, with masonry by Benjamin Lapish of Hawksworth and woodwork by Longley Brothers of Leeds. The style is Early Gothic, built of stone throughout from the Hawksworth quarries, with slate roofs, carved crosses on the east and west gables, and a bell-cote over the chancel arch. The church was built to seat about 120 and was estimated at about £1,000. Church Heritage Record and later parish notes treat the completed building as of 1871.

The east window of 1876, depicting the visit of the Magi, is by John Ward Knowles. Church furniture is by Robert Thompson of Kilburn, with carved mice on the woodwork. A Binns organ and a First World War memorial listing all Menston men and women who served, with a bronze tablet for the fallen, stand in the church. The building is not on the National Heritage List for England.
