# St John of Beverley, Wressle

St John's is a Grade II parish church on Station Road in Wressle, East Riding of Yorkshire, in the Diocese of York: a brick church of 1799 built on the site of the ancient parish church, with Gothic windows inserted in 1873.

## Overview

Historic England lists the Church of St John of Beverley (list entry 1310488, designated 16 December 1966). The listing records a church of 1799 with alterations of 1873, in brick in English garden wall bond with an ashlar plinth and dressings and a Westmorland slate roof. The plan is a west tower, three-bay nave with south porch and north vestry, and a long single-bay chancel. The three-stage tower has ashlar bands, rectangular slit windows, round-headed belfry openings and an embattled parapet. Two-light pointed Gothic windows were inserted in 1873. A plaque above the door states that the church was built on the site of the ancient parish church of Wressell in the thirty-ninth year of George III, 1799, naming the Earl of Egremont as lord of the manor.

Pevsner is cited in the listing. Before 1799, villagers are said to have worshipped in the chapel of nearby Wressle Castle. The dedication is to John of Beverley, the Anglo-Saxon bishop recorded by Bede. The church stands close to Wressle railway station.
