# St John the Baptist, Stainton by Langworth

St John the Baptist’s is a Grade II parish church on Church Lane, Stainton by Langworth, Lincolnshire, in the Diocese of Lincoln: a Georgian rebuild of 1795 on a working-farmyard site, incorporating fabric from a fallen fourteenth-century church.

## Overview

Historic England lists the church (1064046, Grade II, 30 November 1966). The listing describes a parish church of 1795 incorporating fourteenth-century materials, restored in 1885, in squared coursed limestone rubble with limestone and sandstone ashlar dressings and slate roofs. The plan is a two-storey western tower, nave and chancel. The tower has a pyramidal roof, western double doors with a sandstone architrave, and a louvred circular bell opening. Nave side walls have pairs of large semi-circular headed windows of twelve panes. The east window is similar, with 1885 stained glass.

Lincolnshire Heritage Explorer and the listing record that when the medieval church fell, a new church was erected in about 1794–95 to designs by Thomas Berry of Gainsborough. The double-chamfered chancel arch reuses fourteenth-century engaged octagonal responds; their floriate capitals were recut in 1795. Commandment panels flank the arch. The font is among the reused medieval fittings. There are no regular advertised opening hours.
