# St John the Baptist, Plumpton

St John the Baptist is a Grade II former parish church in the hamlet of Plumpton, Northamptonshire, rebuilt in 1822 with reused medieval work and now cared for by the St John the Baptist, Plumpton, Heritage Trust.

## Overview

Historic England lists a church rebuilt in 1822, reusing some medieval work, of coursed squared ironstone and limestone, with an old tile roof to the chancel and a slate roof to the nave. The plan is chancel, nave, west tower and south porch. The three-light east window has fourteenth-century tracery with trefoils and mouchettes; a fourteenth-century priest’s door remains on the south of the chancel. Nave windows are nineteenth-century with Y-tracery. A stone plaque in the porch gable is inscribed “This church rebuilt A.D. 1822”. The inner doorway has a continuous hollow chamfer, probably fourteenth-century, with a large medieval carved stone head reset as the keystone. The nineteenth-century tower has a castellated parapet and single-light bell openings with carved heads on the hoods. Listing NGR is SP 59764 48313.

The interior retains fourteenth-century tower and chancel arches, a late seventeenth-century octagonal font on a baluster pedestal, original box pews and commandment boards of 1822, and a marble wall monument to Ann Moore (d.1683). The church is closed as a parish church and is maintained by the St John the Baptist, Plumpton, Heritage Trust (charity 1050414). A key is kept on a ledge to the left of the porch.
