St John the Baptist, Misson

St John the Baptist is a Grade I parish church on Church Street, Misson, in the Diocese of Southwell and Nottingham and the River Idle Benefice. The village lies on the Nottinghamshire–Yorkshire border.

Overview

Historic England lists the church and its boundary wall together. The parish church is of the fourteenth, fifteenth, sixteenth and nineteenth centuries, restored in 1882, 1886 and 1894, with the lady chapel restored in 1920. Fabric is ashlar, random rubble and brick, partly rendered, with ashlar dressings and slate and felted roofs. The plan has a fourteenth-century west tower (partly nineteenth-century), north aisle, nave, chancel, south aisle and a fourteenth-century vaulted south porch.

The north arcade is fourteenth-century with circular piers; the south arcade has octagonal piers. The font is dated 1662. The chancel contains a five-bay timber screen of 1906. A fifteenth-century square piscina survives in the south-east chapel. Outside, an eighteenth-century ashlar and rubble boundary wall with stone coping runs along Middle Street, Church Street and Vicar Lane for about 125 metres.
