St John the Baptist, Hillmorton

St John the Baptist is a Grade II* parish church at The Locks, Hillmorton, Rugby, Warwickshire, in the Diocese of Coventry. It stands by the canal locks in the lower part of the old village.

Overview

Historic England records thirteenth- and fourteenth-century fabric with a fifteenth-century tower restored in 1655, a sixteenth-century clerestory, north aisle buttresses of about 1609, and a chancel east window renewed in 1640. An early nineteenth-century south porch and west gallery were added. The Victoria County History describes a chancel, nave, north and south aisles, south porch and west tower on a slight eminence away from the later centres of population.

Monuments include an early fourteenth-century effigy of Margaret de Astley under a canopy; Thomas de Astley of about 1345; the priest William de Walton of about 1348; an early fifteenth-century brass; and eighteenth-century wall tablets. Fittings include an eighteenth-century pulpit, pews of about 1774, Royal Arms of Queen Anne and a plain twelfth-century font. A market charter was granted to Thomas de Astley in 1265; he and his wife are buried in the churchyard.
