St John the Baptist, Garboldisham

St John the Baptist is a Grade I parish church on Church Street, Garboldisham, Norfolk, in the Diocese of Norwich.

Overview

Historic England lists a parish church of the thirteenth, fourteenth and fifteenth centuries, restored in 1862, in flint with ashlar dressings and slate roofs. The listing records the chancel reconstructed in 1862 by G. E. Street. The three-stage fifteenth-century west tower is of chequered flint and stone with flushwork diagonal buttresses, a blocked west doorway, a three-light west window and an elaborate crenellated parapet with corner finials. Norfolk Heritage Explorer attributes the porch masonry to the Aldrich family of North Lopham, masons also associated with North Lopham and St Mary, Ixworth. The south aisle has mid-fourteenth-century three-light windows of intersecting type with mouchettes. A clerestory of four two-light square-headed windows has ogee lights and supermullions. The interior has octagonal arcade piers (the west respond circular), a thirteenth-century octagonal font, remains of a fifteenth-century chancel screen, and carved timber Royal Arms over the south door. The church is open daily for prayer.
