# St John the Baptist, Capel

St John the Baptist is a Grade II* parish church on The Street, Capel, Surrey, in the Diocese of Guildford.

## Overview

Historic England records a thirteenth-century church rebuilt and restored in 1865 by H. Woodyer. The fabric is sandstone and Bargate stone blocks with ashlar dressings, Horsham slab roofs, and a wood-shingled bellcote with broach spire under an iron finial. The plan is an aisled nave (the north aisle under a catslide), chancel, north vestry, south and west porches, and a west bellcote. Three thirteenth-century lancets survive on the south side of the chancel.

The interior has a four-bay north arcade on round piers, a chamfered chancel arch, and a bell cage of old design with chamfered posts and cross bracing. Fittings include a nineteenth-century screen, a pulpit of whitestone with coloured marble shafts, and a fine octagonal black-marble font. Monuments include a coloured-marble kneeler to John Cowper (d. 1590) and a City Baroque wall tablet to Robert Cowper of 1720.
