# St James, Tebay

St James’s is a Grade II parish church on Church Street, Tebay, Cumbria, in the Diocese of Carlisle and the parish of Orton with Tebay.

## Overview

Historic England lists a parish church completed in 1880 to designs by C. J. Ferguson, a pupil of George Gilbert Scott. Until the mid-nineteenth century Tebay was a hamlet in Orton parish. After the railway arrived in 1846 the population grew; the Bishop of Carlisle and the London and North Western Railway Company supported a separate ecclesiastical parish. Harvey Goodwin, Bishop of Carlisle, consecrated the church on 20 July 1880.

The fabric is rock-faced snecked granite with dressed-stone details and graduated slate roofs, built on a sloping site: an aisleless nave and chancel, a two-storey north porch, an apsidal western baptistry and a three-stage round bell turret with conical spire. The interior has polychrome brick and a wide pointed chancel arch. Fittings include a 1930 polygonal granite pulpit and a tapered cylindrical granite font. Early twentieth-century glass is by T. Curtis of Ward and Hughes, including a First World War window, and by Abbott and Co. of Lancaster.
