# St James, Ravenfield

St James's is a Grade II* parish church on Church Lane, Ravenfield, South Yorkshire, in the Diocese of Sheffield. Historic England records a Gothick church of 1756 by John Carr for Mrs Elizabeth Parkin of Ravenfield Hall.

## Overview

The listing describes ashlar sandstone under a Welsh slate roof: a three-bay single cell with a tower rising above the west gable entrance and an apsidal east end. The west front has nosed steps to a central panelled door in a swept-shouldered architrave beneath a consoled cornice, with a two-light ogee-headed window over, set beneath a pediment linking pilasters. The tower has a west clock in a shaped panel, ogee-headed two-light belfry openings with Y-tracery, a cornice with corner obelisks and a ball-finialled spirelet. Nave windows are Y-traceried, two-light and ogee-headed, with a coped parapet and corner obelisks.

The parish history states that the present church replaced a medieval chapel on the site. The tower houses six bells: four of 1756 by Joseph Ludlam of Rotherham and two of 1797 by Thomas Hilton of Wath, now chimed by an Ellacombe mechanism. Interior fittings recorded in the listing include a gallery, hatchments and arms of George III, and monuments to the Parkin, Bosville and Osborne families.
