# St James the Great, Ince

St James's is a Grade II* Church of England parish church on Pool Lane, Ince, Cheshire, in the Diocese of Chester and the parish of Thornton-le-Moors with Ince and Elton.

## Overview

Historic England records a red sandstone church with grey slate roofs, partly rebuilt in 1854 by Edward Hodkinson. The plan is nave, north aisle, chancel, south porch and west tower. The chancel has a fourteenth-century three-light east window with original simple tracery and fifteenth-century two-light square-headed side windows. The west tower, of about 1485–93, is by Simon Ripley; it was raised two courses in 1854 and has diagonal buttresses. Nave, aisle and porch were wholly rebuilt in 1854 in Perpendicular style.

Interior fittings include a seventeenth-century oak arch-braced collar roof to the chancel, bells of 1622 and 1636, a late seventeenth-century altar rail with spiral-turned balusters, a carved oak sanctuary chair of 1634, and an early eighteenth-century brass candelabrum.
