# St James the Great, Hebden Bridge

St James the Great is a Grade II Commissioners church on Church Lane, Mytholm, at the western edge of Hebden Bridge in the Calder Valley. It is an active parish church in the Diocese of Leeds.

## Overview

Historic England records a Commissioners church by Pickersgill and Oates of York of about 1833, with additions and alterations of 1874 to 1876 by R. Norman Shaw, when the north and south galleries and the ceiling were removed. The fabric is ashlar under a slate roof: a three-stage embattled west tower with angle buttresses rising to pinnacles, a five-bay aisleless nave in lancet style, a south porch, and a two-bay chancel of 1876 with side aisles and a three-light lancet east window.

The interior has a wide nave with a queen-post roof and a tall pointed chancel arch. Stained glass illustrating the life of Christ, mostly of the 1870s, is by Heaton, Butler and Bayne. A carved reredos by Alfonso Noflaner of about 1934 marks the centenary. The parish notes that the building began as a chapel of ease in the ancient parish of Halifax and became a parish church in 1844.
