Overview
Historic England records a nave and west tower of 1774–75 by C. Bisbrowne (Cuthbert Bisbrown) and a chancel of 1900 by H. Havelock Sutton, in brick with stone dressings. The five-bay nave has two tiers of windows, sill bands and a stone-coped brick parapet. The four-stage tower has an embattled brick parapet, a three-face clock and paired louvred bell openings. The interior has galleries on three sides on slender quatrefoil cast-iron columns, which the listing calls the earliest remaining example in Liverpool and among the earliest in the country. Wikipedia and the listing note a timber roof of 1846 by William Culshaw, a barrel-vaulted chancel, and an 1881 east window by Henry Holiday. Built as a chapel of ease to Walton, the church gained its own parish in 1844. Declared redundant in 1974 and vested in the Churches Conservation Trust in 1976, it returned to use in 2010 as St James in the City.
