# St James, Braithwell

St James’s is a Grade II* parish church on Micklebring Lane, Braithwell, South Yorkshire, in the Diocese of Sheffield.

## Overview

Historic England dates the church to the twelfth to fifteenth centuries, with the chancel rebuilt in 1845 and an organ chamber added in 1894. The fabric is magnesian limestone ashlar with mixed sandstone and limestone rubble, and roofs of Welsh slate and stone slate. The plan is a three-stage Perpendicular west tower, three-bay nave with south aisle and porch, north organ chamber, and two-bay chancel. The tower has an embattled parapet with eight crocketed pinnacles.

The listing records a twelfth-century south doorway inside the porch, with six crosses on the lintel soffit and a cable-moulded tympanum of geometrical ornament. The south arcade has octagonal piers; bay three shows arches of a former or proposed crossing. The chancel retains a thirteenth-century treble-chamfered arch and an Easter sepulchre. Fittings include three sixteenth-century carved panels reset in a later pulpit.
