# St James, Baldersby St James

St James the Greater is a Grade I High Victorian parish church on Wide Howe Lane, Baldersby St James, North Yorkshire, designed by William Butterfield for William Dawnay, 7th Viscount Downe, and built in 1856–58.

## Overview

Historic England lists a west tower with banded masonry and a lucarned spire, a five-bay aisled nave with south porch, and a two-bay unaisled lower chancel, in snecked stone with ashlar details and a red tile roof. The foundation stone was laid on 22 May 1856. Butterfield’s decorative scheme survives almost complete: quatrefoil nave piers, brick interior walling with ashlar bands, a low pierced stone screen, inlaid floor tiles, sanctuary walls of red-veined alabaster, a painted chancel roof, and a marble font with a tall suspended spire-like cover. The church was consecrated in 1857.

The churchyard wall is separately listed at Grade II and the lych gate at Grade I. The building formed part of Butterfield’s estate work for Viscount Downe and remains an active church in the parish of Baldersby with Dishforth in the Diocese of York.
