# St Helen, Treeton

St Helen’s is a Grade I parish church on Front Street, Treeton, South Yorkshire, in the Diocese of Sheffield: a prominent medieval church recorded in Domesday Book’s territory of Hallamshire.

## Overview

Historic England lists a church with a twelfth-century north arcade and lower tower, otherwise late thirteenth- and early fourteenth-century, with fifteenth-century additions of south chapel, south porch, west bay of the nave, clerestory, present roofs and the upper stage of the tower. Restorations followed in 1869 and 1892; a nineteenth-century vestry was extended in 1973. Fabric is rubble and ashlar sandstone with limestone dressings and an ashlar limestone upper tower, under lead roofs. The plan is a three-stage south-west tower, three-bay nave with two-bay aisles, south porch and north-west vestry, and a three-bay chancel with south chapel.

Wikipedia notes a church here by the twelfth century, possibly incorporating earlier work, and a Domesday mention of a church at Treeton. The Perpendicular upper tower has transomed two-light belfry openings, an embattled parapet and crocketed pinnacles; a clock face is on the east side. Six bells hang in the tower, three installed in 1892. The church is a landmark visible from all directions around the former mining village.
