# St Helen, Burghwallis

St Helen’s is the Grade I parish church of Burghwallis, South Yorkshire, an Anglo-Saxon and medieval church with herringbone rubble, in the Diocese of Sheffield.

## Overview

Historic England dates the church to the tenth–eleventh and twelfth centuries, with fourteenth- to sixteenth-century alterations, restored in 1864 and 1883. Materials are rubble, partly laid in herringbone, with red tile roofs. The plan is west tower, three-bay nave with south porch, and a narrower three-bay chancel with north vestry. The tower’s lower stages are thirteenth-century, the embattled top stage fifteenth-century, with gargoyles and crocketed pinnacles. The gabled porch has an altered Saxon south doorway with a segmental head beneath a round arch.

Interior fittings recorded in the listing include a pre-Reformation altar stone reinstated in 1930, stone sedilia, and a possibly early font bowl. The 1883 restoration is attributed to J. L. Pearson. The church was listed Grade I on 5 June 1968 (NHLE 1151457).
