St Helen, Brigsley

St Helen’s is a Grade II* parish church on Church Lane, Brigsley, Lincolnshire, in the Diocese of Lincoln: a small medieval church whose aisles were taken down in 1796.

Overview

Historic England lists an eleventh-century tower with fourteenth- and fifteenth-century windows and parapet, thirteenth-century blocked nave arcades, a fourteenth- to fifteenth-century clerestory, and an early fourteenth-century chancel. Alterations of 1796 included removal of the aisles, insertion of a west door and refitting of the interior. Later restorations include the chancel in 1961. The tower is ironstone rubble and squared blocks with bands of cobbles, limestone and chalk; the nave is squared ironstone with brick blocking; the chancel mixes ironstone, limestone and chalk. Roofs are slate to the nave and pantiles to the chancel.

The interior retains a tall round-headed tower arch, exposed lower sections of the former arcade piers, a medieval octagonal font, and a mid-eighteenth-century black marble floor slab to Richard Cressy (died 1746). Eighteenth-century fittings include a panelled octagonal pulpit with tester, communion rails with column-on-vase balusters, and a half-glazed door to the tower arch. Painted commandment boards and Royal Arms of 1819 by G. Stout of Grimsby survive. The church stands on raised ground east of Church Lane, south-south-west of Grimsby.
