# St Helen, Brant Broughton

St Helen’s is a Grade I parish church on Church Walk, Brant Broughton, Lincolnshire, in the Diocese of Lincoln and the parish of Brant Broughton with Stragglethorpe.

## Overview

Historic England records fabric of the eleventh, thirteenth, late fourteenth and early sixteenth centuries, with work of 1812 and a restoration of 1873–76 by G. F. Bodley for Canon Frederick Sutton. Bodley rebuilt the early-nineteenth-century chancel and added a vestry and north chapel in a late Decorated style. The plan is a west steeple, aisled nave with porches, and chancel with north chapel and vestry, in limestone ashlar with lead roofs. Battlements to nave and aisles carry shields; the chancel has a quatrefoil parapet, all with crocketed pinnacles and gargoyles. The spire rises to 198 feet, with a clock of 1881 by William Potts of Leeds.

The interior has three-bay nave arcades on tall octagonal piers and a carefully restored early-sixteenth-century angel nave roof, elaborately painted. Bodley designed the choir stalls, pulpit and chancel screen (1890); T. Garner made the font cover in 1889. The chancel has a painted wood-and-plaster lierne vault and a marble reredos incorporating a late-fifteenth-century German Ascension. Canon Sutton designed most of the stained glass, candlesticks and candelabra; the east windows are by Burlison and Grylls.
