# St Gregory the Great, Kirknewton

St Gregory the Great is the Grade II* parish church of Kirknewton, Northumberland, a Border church with a low vaulted chancel and a nave rebuilt by John Dobson in 1860, in the Diocese of Newcastle.

## Overview

Historic England lists the church (1153604, 21 September 1951). The listing describes thirteenth- and nineteenth-century fabric: Dobson’s 1860 nave, a later nineteenth-century Perpendicular north-west tower of whinstone, south porch, north aisle, south transept and a very low two-bay chancel. The chancel has a depressed pointed tunnel vault rising from walls only about three feet high, widely read as protection in Border warfare. A twelfth-century carving of the Adoration of the Magi stands left of the chancel arch. The south transept holds a 1458 monument to Andrew Burrell and his wife. The Cheviot Benefice records Christian worship here from the eleventh century or earlier and the grave of the social reformer Josephine Butler (1828–1906) in the churchyard.
