# St Giles, South Mymms

St Giles is the Grade I parish church of South Mimms (often spelled Mymms in this dedication) on Blanche Lane, Hertfordshire, in the Diocese of St Albans.

## Overview

A church at South Mimms is recorded from about 1140, when it was granted to Walden Abbey. The listing dates the chancel to the thirteenth century, the nave to the late fourteenth or early fifteenth, the three-stage west tower to the mid-fifteenth century, and the red-brick north aisle and chapel to work pursuant to the will of H. Frowyk (d. 1527). Walls are split flint rubble with stone dressings except the brick north aisle and chapel. G. E. Street refenestrated and refaced all but the tower, south porch and much of the interior in 1877–8.

The timber south porch stands on a stone base. The Frowyk chapel is enclosed by wooden screens with the family’s boar’s-head badge. Medieval stained glass once filled the north aisle; donor glass was in place by 1526. The church served the whole ancient parish until nineteenth-century districts were created at Potters Bar and Barnet.
