# St German of Auxerre, Cardiff

St German of Auxerre is a Grade I Church in Wales church on the corner of Star Street and Metal Street, Adamsdown, Cardiff, in the Diocese of Llandaff and the Roath and Cathays Ministry Area.

## Overview

Cadw records a church of 1881–84 by G. F. Bodley and T. Garner, replacing an earlier iron church on a site given by Lord Tredegar. The style is Free Decorated: pink-grey rock-faced Swelldon stone with Bath stone dressings and slate roofs. The plan is a five-bay hall-church nave without clerestory but with tall aisles, a three-bay chancel with flying buttresses over north and south chapels, a polygonal north-west stair turret, an east vestry, and a tall octagonal fleche. Cadw grades it I as among the finest nineteenth-century religious buildings in Wales.

The interior has boarded wagon roofs with stencilling, a full-height chancel arch, and a rood beam by Farmer and Brindley to Bodley’s designs. Fittings include a reredos of 1921–22 by Hare, Bodley’s painted organ case of 1887, a font of 1898, and glass by Burlison and Grylls, C. E. Kempe and Hugh Easton. Wikipedia records consecration in March 1886, when the parish of St German was created.
