St Germain, Scothern

St Germain is a Grade II* parish church on Church Street, Scothern, Lincolnshire, in the Diocese of Lincoln and the Welton, Dunholme and Scothern benefice.

Overview

Historic England dates the church to about 1200, with late-thirteenth-century work, a tower of about 1590, and restorations of 1796, 1840, 1876 (by Kirke of Sleaford) and a 1904 rebuilding of the chancel and vestry. Materials are coursed and squared limestone rubble with some red brick and ashlar dressings and plain tiled roofs with stone-coped gables. The plan comprises a western tower, nave, chancel, north transept and vestry. The three-stage tower of about 1591 has clasping angle buttresses, an embattled parapet with pinnacles and gargoyles, paired belfry lights in semi-circular-headed openings, a reused thirteenth-century west door with head stops, and an eighteenth-century clock. A staircase rises in the north-east angle.

Lincolnshire Heritage Explorer notes a Perpendicular tower (possibly 1590), an Early English nave arcade and a twelfth-century chancel arch, and a floriated tomb slab formerly in the chancel. Archaeological watching briefs in 2000 confirmed that the north aisle was rebuilt in brick after a 1796 faculty and later partly rebuilt in stone when the north transept was added in 1840. The church is open daily from 9am to 5pm.
