Overview
Historic England records a basilican church built on land sold by the Gillott Trustees, at the corner of Portland Road and City Road. The fabric is brick with Hollington stone dressings and decorative stone and tile work. Hardwood floors have walkways of stone and green Westmorland slate. Nave columns are Shap granite and those in the chancel green Swedish marble, both with Portland stone capitals. The long nave and chancel share one space, oriented south-east to north-west, with aisles, transepts, an ambulatory corridor to parish rooms, and twin west porches. The west gable has round-headed windows, diaper brickwork and a carved stone panel of a shepherd, probably St Germain; a late Gothic bellcote sits above. Porch doors sit in Romanesque brick and stone surrounds with cushion capitals.
Birmingham archives record an iron City Road Mission licensed in 1896, transferred to St Augustine in 1905 and dedicated to St Germain in 1907. The present church was dedicated in September 1917 despite wartime restrictions; the iron church became the parish hall. A separate parish was constituted in April 1920.
