# St George Tombland, Norwich

St George Tombland is a Grade I parish church on Tombland, opposite Norwich Cathedral, in the Diocese of Norwich.

## Overview

Historic England records a fifteenth- and sixteenth-century parish church of flint with stone and brick dressings, a brick clerestory and lead roofs: west tower, nave and chancel, north and south aisles and porches, and a north chancel chapel. The three-stage tower of about 1445, repaired in 1645, has diagonal buttresses, a statue niche, square traceried sound holes and a crenellated parapet with lozenge flushwork and corner pinnacles. The two-storey south porch has a tierceron vault with a central boss of St George.

Norfolk Heritage Explorer notes a first mention in 1248, a thirteenth-century core, and a late-nineteenth-century restoration by Ewan Christian. Wikipedia records legacies for building the tower in 1445. The interior has polygonal arcade piers, an arch-braced nave roof with Renaissance detail on the wall-plate coving, and important monuments, including one by Scheemakers.
