St George, Stowlangtoft

St George’s on The Street, Stowlangtoft, is a Grade I Decorated parish church of about 1370–90, built principally for Robert Dacey de Ashfield, in the Diocese of St Edmundsbury and Ipswich.

Overview

Historic England records a nave, chancel, west tower and south porch of flint and limestone rubble with freestone dressings, flat roofs behind parapets, and extensive chequerboard flushwork on the base, parapets, buttresses and porch (NHLE 1182897; listed 15 November 1954). William White restored the church in 1855–56. The interior is notable for late medieval woodwork: the lower part of a fifteenth-century rood screen with original paint, fine fifteenth-century nave benches with poppyheads and carved figures, and choir stalls with misericords. There is an octagonal limestone font with figures under arches, a St Christopher wall painting, fifteenth-century glass in the west nave window heads, and a monument to Paul D’Ewes by John Johnson of London (1624). The parish is Stowlangtoft, in the Pakenham benefice with Norton, Tostock, Great Ashfield and Hunston.
