# St George, New Mills

St George’s is a Grade II Church of England parish church on Church Road, New Mills, Derbyshire, a Commissioners’ church of 1829–30 by Robert Dennis Chantrell, in the Diocese of Derby.

## Overview

The church was built in 1829–30 in the lancet style for His Majesty’s Commissioners as a chapel of ease to All Saints, Glossop. Chantrell, a pupil of Sir John Soane, designed a galleried nave, west tower with recessed spire, and north-east and north-west vestries, in squared masonry with freestone dressings and slate roofs. Preston and Vaughan rebuilt the chancel in a matching style in 1897–98. The interior keeps galleries on three sides on clustered cast-iron columns; a conservative timber screen and reredos were added in the 1950s. Pevsner notes an organ case of 1835 by Samuel Renn. Stained glass includes work signed by Powell Bros of Leeds (1893) and Jones and Willis (1913).

Historic England listed the church Grade II on 2 November 1955 (list entry 1088140). The parish is New Mills St George.
