# St George, Jesmond

St George’s is a Grade I parish church on Osborne Road, Jesmond, Newcastle upon Tyne, in the Diocese of Newcastle. Shipbuilder Charles Mitchell paid for the building as Jesmond expanded in the 1880s.

## Overview

Historic England records a parish church of 1888 by T. R. Spence: an aisled nave with south porch and west baptistry, an aisled chancel, and a south-east tower and vestry. The style is thirteenth-century Gothic with a Venetian campanile. Fabric is sandstone ashlar with a plinth and a graduated Lakeland slate roof. The foundation stone was laid in January 1887; Bishop Ernest Roland Wilberforce consecrated the church on 16 October 1888. Interior finishing continued into December 1891.

The listing stresses Arts and Crafts decoration of outstanding quality: a bronze St George designed by Spence in a Caen-stone west wall; mosaic lining of the chancel by Spence with figures by C. W. Mitchell, executed by Rust and Co.; glass by John W. Brown, C. W. Mitchell, O’Neil Bros. and the Gateshead Stained Glass Co.; metalwork by Alfred Shirley; marble altar, reredos and font by Emley and Co.; and an oak pulpit by Ralph Hedley. A bronze tablet signed by Frampton commemorates Mitchell, partner to Lord Armstrong. The tower is a local landmark, echoing the campanile of St Mark’s, Venice.
