# St George, Anstey

St George is a Grade I parish church at St Georges End, Anstey, Hertfordshire, in the Diocese of St Albans. Historic England records a late twelfth-century church with later medieval work, including a crossing tower, transepts, aisled nave and a fifteenth-century south porch.

## Overview

The fabric is flint with stone dressings. The crossing shows Norman origins; the upper tower is later medieval and carries a slender Hertfordshire spike. The four-bay nave has quatrefoil piers and a fifteenth-century clerestory with quatrefoil windows. The south transept contains a canopied tomb recess of about 1300 with a recumbent effigy. A circular stair turret at the south-west of the south transept is lit by a cross-loop.

The twelfth-century font has a square bowl carved with mermen holding their tails. A screen incorporates remains of a fifteenth-century screen. The church is reached through a fifteenth-century lychgate that later housed a lock-up. A memorial window by Patrick Reyntiens, dedicated in 2000, records a wartime bomber crash on the castle mound behind the church.
