# St Francis of Assisi, Bardney

St Francis of Assisi on Station Road, Bardney, was a modest wooden Catholic chapel of ease in Lincolnshire, converted in 1945 from an agricultural building and closed for worship in 2021.

## Overview

Taking Stock records a humble rectangular timber building on a red brick base, clad in vertical tongue-and-groove boarding, with a small gabled porch. It is not listed and is of no architectural importance. Miss Gladys Peet, received into the Catholic Church in the late 1920s and then the only Catholic in the village, secured land and the conversion of an old poultry hut in 1945. Wartime Mass had been said at Bardney airfield; the sugar-beet factory of 1927 brought seasonal Irish workers. Fittings came from the US forces chapel at Nocton Hall. Stations of the Cross are said to have been made by Italian prisoners of war.

Bishop Patrick McKinney of Nottingham decreed the church transferred to secular use from 31 August 2021 after a final Mass on 28 August. The chapel was served from St Hugh’s, Lincoln.
