St Faith, Kelstern

St Faith’s is a Grade II* parish church in Kelstern, on the Lincolnshire Wolds, standing on the site of a deserted medieval village. The nave and tower are medieval; James Fowler of Louth rebuilt the chancel and restored the church in 1886–87.

Overview

Historic England lists a fourteenth- and sixteenth-century church with a nineteenth-century chancel: a two-stage rendered west tower, nave, chancel and north porch, in squared coursed limestone rubble with ashlar render and slate roofs. Fourteenth-century three-light windows with cusped ogee heads survive on the north nave wall, with sixteenth-century windows further east and on the south. Interior fittings are largely nineteenth-century except for a fourteenth-century octagonal font on clustered shafts and six sixteenth-century bench ends carved with blank arcading and, locally reported, a fox and hounds.

Monuments include an alabaster standing figure of 1604 to Elizabeth South, wife of Sir Francis South, and a tablet to Dame Ann South (d. 1620). Three stained-glass windows by Sir Ninian Comper (1954–58) commemorate members of the Sleight family. The church is in the Binbrook Group in the Diocese of Lincoln.
