# St Elphin, Warrington

St Elphin’s is the Grade II* parish church of Warrington, on Church Street, in the Diocese of Liverpool.

## Overview

Historic England lists medieval fragments, including a chancel mostly of the fourteenth century, with the present church mainly of 1859–67 by Frederick and Horace Francis — “probably their best work” (Pevsner). The plan is a wide nave, wide aisles, crossing tower and tall spire. The listing notes a very elaborate organ screen of 1908 by William and Segar Owen, some glass by Pugin, medieval monuments and others of the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Listing NGR: SJ6153288397.

Wikipedia records a church tradition from about 650, a priest in Domesday, a crypt of 1354 associated with William Boteler, Civil War damage, a 1696 rebuild and a 1770 nave. Most of the present fabric, including the landmark 86-metre spire of 1867, is the Francis brothers’ work. The church is the civic parish church of Warrington, in the archdeaconry and deanery of Warrington.
