# St Edward the Confessor, Mottingham

St Edward the Confessor is a mid-twentieth-century parish church on St Keverne Road, Mottingham, in the London Borough of Bromley, in the Diocese of Southwark. It stands on a large inter-war London County Council estate and is not listed.

## Overview

The National Churches Trust account, drawing on parish history, records that the hall, vicarage and church were first planned as a memorial to Bishop Edward Stuart Talbot, first Bishop of Southwark. The church hall opened on 14 July 1937 and the vicarage was blessed on 12 April 1938. War interrupted the scheme; the Talbot memorial title was dropped and a simpler neo-Gothic design adopted under the dedication to St Edward the Confessor.

The present church was designed by David Nye and Partners. The cornerstone was laid on 29 June 1957 by the Revd K. G. Hoare, first priest of the parish, and dedicated by the Bishop of Woolwich. The church was consecrated on 19 July 1958 by Bertram Simpson, Bishop of Southwark. The 1937 hall remains in use beside the church. London Churches in Photographs confirms the 1957 date and the Nye attribution. The building is a modern Gothic interior with high ceilings and clear glazing.
