# St Edith, Bishop Wilton

St Edith’s, known as the Queen of the Wolds, is a Grade I parish church on Main Street, Bishop Wilton, East Riding of Yorkshire, in the Diocese of York: a Norman church remodelled for Sir Tatton Sykes by J. L. Pearson.

## Overview

Historic England lists a church with twelfth-century chancel, twelfth-century nave with thirteenth-century aisles rebuilt in the fourteenth century, an early fourteenth-century north transept, late fourteenth-century west tower and spire, and a nineteenth-century south porch. It was restored in 1858–59 for Sir Tatton Sykes by J. L. Pearson, with a choir screen by G. E. Street. The fabric is ashlar with tiled roofs. The plan has a three-stage west tower with recessed spire, a four-bay aisled nave with south porch and north transept, and a three-bay chancel with north vestry. The south doorway is a notable Norman entrance with nook-shafts and richly carved orders.

Pearson retained the medieval west tower, enclosed it with aisles, and added a finely pointed steeple. The church is one of the Sykes churches of the Yorkshire Wolds and is now in the Benefice of Garrowby Hill. Pevsner called it a fascinating church whose history is not fully cleared up. There are no regular advertised opening hours; level access is recorded to the main areas.
