# St Dyfrig, Treforest

St Dyfrig’s is a Grade II Catholic church at the south end of Broadway, Treforest, Pontypridd, a basilican church of 1926–27 by A. G. Lynham in the Diocese of Cardiff.

## Overview

Cadw records a mission of 1853 and a Gothic chapel-school of 1857 on Wood Road. Under Canon McManus, land on Broadway by the Taff was leased in 1921; the presbytery and war-memorial hall were up by 1924. Archbishop Mostyn laid the foundation stone on 4 November 1926 and consecrated the church on 14 November 1927. Lynham (1879–1958), partner in Thomas & Morgan & Partners of Pontypridd, designed it; Knox and Wells of Cardiff were contractors. It is Lynham’s only known Catholic church.

The steel-framed building is brick-clad with stone dressings under a slate roof. A five-bay west narthex has Romanesque doorways and a polygonal turret with copper dome. The six-bay nave has plaster tunnel vaulting, brick arcades and a polygonal apse. After Vatican II the original altar, rails and font were removed; Archbishop Murphy consecrated a new forward altar on 6 November 1975. Marquetry furnishings of 1999 are by parishioner Penanne Crabbe. Cadw lists the church for its distinctive inter-war basilican style (reference 24878). OS easting/northing 308333 / 189278.
