Overview
Historic England lists a cruciform church of Norman origin, with eleventh-century and late fourteenth-century fabric at the crossing and tower, and a nave rebuilt in a major restoration by Sir Arthur Blomfield in 1887–89. Materials are various roughly coursed limestones; roofs are mostly leaded, the south chapel tiled. The plan is a long nave and aisles, south porch, transepts, central tower, chancel with a two-bay south chapel and a north vestry. The medieval crossing tower and transepts survive: a low embattled tower with two-light Perpendicular bell openings and a stair turret on the north.
South of the chancel is a fifteenth-century chapel of the Ludlow family. The listing highlights exceptionally high-quality late Victorian fittings in the chancel, including work by Harry Hems, a varied array of nineteenth- and early twentieth-century stained glass, and the historic significance of a Saxon minster site. Wiltshire’s community history notes that Blomfield left the central tower, the south wall of the chancel and the south porch from the old church, and that an organ case of 1792 came from Salisbury Cathedral. The parish is Warminster Saint Denys.
