St David, Little Dewchurch

St David's at Little Dewchurch, Herefordshire, is a Grade II* parish church in the Diocese of Hereford: a fourteenth-century west tower with nave and chancel rebuilt in 1869–71 by F. Preedy.

Overview

Historic England lists a parish church of the fourteenth century, rebuilt apart from the tower from 1869–71 by F. Preedy, in sandstone ashlar under Welsh slate roofs with cresting to the chancel. The plan is a west tower, two-bay nave with south porch and two-bay chancel. The tower, thoroughly restored, has a deeply moulded plinth, two external stages, an embattled parapet and grotesque water-spouts, with diagonal buttresses to the north-west and south-west. The east end of the chancel has three stepped trefoiled lights under a two-centred arch. The Royal Commission noted that some thirteenth- and fourteenth-century windows from the previous church were partly reused. A chapelry of Lugwardine until 1857, it then became a perpetual curacy.

Interior fittings are largely late nineteenth-century: a marble and tessellated reredos with Agnus Dei, stained glass including a Crucifixion in the east window, oak communion rails, a stone pulpit and a circular font with roundels. RCHME records five bells, one medieval, and a fourteenth-century churchyard cross south of the church. The church is open 10am to 5pm from April to October.
