# St Cybi, Llangybi

St Cybi’s is a Grade II* Church in Wales parish church in the centre of Llangybi, Monmouthshire, immediately east of the White Hart. It is in the Diocese of Monmouth and the Heart of Monmouthshire Ministry Area. John Newman called it one of the most interesting churches in the Usk Valley.

## Overview

Cadw records no datable features earlier than the fifteenth century, but Perpendicular windows are inserted into earlier walling, so the church may be thirteenth- or fourteenth-century in essence, with the tower contemporary with the nave or a little later. The building was refurbished and rewindowed probably in the late fifteenth century, refurnished about 1700, and restored in 1909–10 by W. H. Dashwood Caple, who patched walls and windows and built the south vestry. Adam of Usk, the chronicler and papal official, was incumbent in 1423.

Coflein and Wikipedia highlight a notable collection of medieval wall paintings, including a Christ of the Trades of about 1460, painted texts on the nave walls, and Royal Arms above the chancel arch. The medieval nave roof is a regional wagon of closely spaced arch-braced trussed rafters. Cadw lists the church as a good medieval building, refitted in the seventeenth century and sensitively restored in 1909–10, with group value in the village centre.
